Akash (missile)
Akash is a surface-to-air missile. It is significant for India's air defense. It has a range of 25 kilometers.
Akash is a mediumârange, surfaceâtoâair missile (SAM) system developed indigenously by Indiaâs Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to provide a mobile, allâweather airâdefence capability for the Indian Army and Air Force. Its defining feature is the integration of a phasedâarray surveillance radar (the Rajendra) with a commandâguided missile that switches to activeâradar homing in the terminal phase, allowing simultaneous engagement of multiple lowâaltitude threats up to 25âŻkm awayâan unprecedented level of autonomy for a domestically produced system.
Origins and Development History
The Akash programme was launched in 1990 under the DRDOâs Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) to replace ageing Sovietâorigin airâdefence assets. Early design work was carried out by the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad, while the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) contributed seeker technology. The first successful flight test occurred on 12âŻDecemberâŻ1999 at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, where the missile achieved a range of 12âŻkm and a speed of MachâŻ2.5. Subsequent trials between 2000 and 2008 refined the guidance algorithm, extended the operational envelope to 18âŻkm altitude, and validated the systemâs ability to track and engage six targets concurrently.
How the System Works
Akash comprises three principal subsystems: the Rajendra 3âD phasedâarray radar, the mobile launchâandâcontrol vehicle, and the missile itself. The radar, mounted on a 6âtonne truck, can detect aircraft up to 45âŻkm and provide fireâcontrol data to up to four launch units within a 30âkm radius. Each launch vehicle carries four readyâtoâfire missiles, each 4.2âŻm long and weighing 600âŻkg, stored in sealed canisters that double as launch tubes. After launch, the missile follows an inertial navigation trajectory guided by continuous uplink commands; in the final 5âŻkm, an onâboard activeâradar seeker (operating in the Xâband) acquires the target and homes autonomously, achieving a hit probability of over 80âŻ% against maneuvering aircraft in trials.
Operational Deployment
The Indian Army formally inducted Akash in 2009, deploying the first battery to the Western Commandâs 16âŻInfantry Division. By 2015, three regimentsâeach consisting of two batteriesâwere operational, providing layered defence for critical infrastructure such as the DelhiâMumbai railway corridor. The Indian Air Force followed with a separate variant, the AkashâS, mounted on a Tatra truck chassis for rapid redeployment. As of 2023, the Ministry of Defence reports that over 500 missiles have been produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and that more than 30 launch units are active across the countryâs northern, western, and eastern theatres.
Upgrades and Export Prospects
In 2020 DRDO unveiled the Akash Mkâ1A, an upgraded version extending the maximum range to 30âŻkm and incorporating a dualâmode seeker that combines active radar with infrared imaging for enhanced resistance to electronic counterâmeasures. The Mkâ1A also features a reduced reaction time of 6âŻseconds and compatibility with the newer Rajendraâ2 radar, which offers a 20âŻ% increase in detection range. Export interest has materialised from Malaysia, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates; a 2015 memorandum of understanding with Malaysiaâs Ministry of Defence envisaged a potential sale of up to 120 missiles, though final contracts remain pending as of 2024.
Strategic Significance
Akash represents a cornerstone of Indiaâs âMakeâinâIndiaâ defence strategy, reducing reliance on foreign SAMs such as the Russian Buk and French Crotale. Its indigenous production chainâspanning radar, missile, and launchâvehicle manufacturingâhas generated a domestic industrial base capable of sustaining longâterm upgrades and variant development. Moreover, the systemâs ability to protect forward operating bases, airfields, and critical civilian infrastructure against lowâlevel aerial threats enhances the survivability of Indiaâs broader airâdefence network, positioning Akash as a pivotal element in the nationâs layered deterrence architecture.
