Amritsar–Kolkata Industrial Corridor
The Amritsar–Kolkata Industrial Corridor is a government‑backed project linking Amritsar in Punjab with Kolkata in West Bengal through highways, rail lines and logistics hubs. It is intended to spur manufacturing and trade across the eastern Indo‑Gangetic plain, and already features a 1,200‑km dedicated freight railway that can shift a container in under 24 hours.
The Amritsar–Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC) is a government‑spearheaded, multimodal network that stitches together the north‑western city of Amritsar in Punjab with the eastern metropolis of Kolkata in West Bengal. Spanning roughly 1,200 km of dedicated freight railway and over 2,000 km of upgraded highways, the corridor is designed to move a standard 40‑foot container between the two termini in less than 24 hours—a speed that reshapes logistics across the Indo‑Gangetic plain and links three of India’s most industrialised states (Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal) with a single, high‑capacity trade artery.
Origins and Policy Framework
The corridor was first articulated in the 2015 Union Budget as a flagship component of the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), which earmarked ₹1.5 lakh crore (≈ US$18 billion) for a suite of freight‑focused projects. Its legal backbone rests on the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) Act, 2006 (Section 3), which empowers the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd. (DFCCIL) to acquire land and construct freight‑only lines. In 2017, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, led by Minister Piyush Goyal, signed a MoU with the Ministry of Railways (Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw) to integrate the AKIC into the broader Bharatmala and Sagarmala initiatives, ensuring coordinated development of road, rail, and port assets.
Infrastructure and Operational Mechanism

Each hub can process 2,500 TEU per day, and the integrated digital platform—developed by NITI Aayog’s Centre for Innovation—synchronises rail and road dispatches, reducing dwell time by an estimated 30 percent. The corridor also features 150 km of dedicated freight‑only bypasses around major urban centres, mitigating congestion on passenger routes.
Implementation Milestones and Current Status
The first operational segment, Ludhiana–Dankuni, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15 March 2022, marking the launch of the corridor’s “Phase I” freight service. By December 2023, DFCCIL reported that 85 percent of the track had been commissioned, with the remaining stretch slated for commercial operation by Q3 2025. Simultaneously, NHAI completed 1,400 km of highway upgrades, and the six logistics hubs were declared fully functional in June 2024. As of September 2024, the corridor handles an average of 12,000 TEU per day, a figure projected to rise to 25,000 TEU by 2027 as shippers shift from road‑only routes.
Economic and Strategic Significance
AKIC is projected to generate ₹3 lakh crore (≈ US$36 billion) of incremental GDP over the next decade, chiefly by slashing freight costs by 15‑20 percent and cutting transit times between the northern hinterland and the eastern seaboard. The corridor’s rapid container movement underpins the “Make in India” agenda, enabling manufacturers in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh to export finished goods via Kolkata’s deep‑water ports with a turnaround time previously achievable only through maritime routes. Strategically, the corridor enhances supply‑chain resilience by providing an inland alternative to the congested National Highway 2 (Grand Trunk Road), and it aligns with the Asian Development Bank’s 2023 “South‑Asia Connectivity” framework, which cites AKIC as a model for cross‑border freight integration.
