Bar Council of India
The Bar Council of India is the statutory body established under the Advocates Act, 1961, to regulate the legal profession and legal education in India. It sets standards for professional conduct, grants licenses to practice, and oversees disciplinary actions. Bar Council of India (BCI) is the statutory regulator of the legal profession and legal education in the Republic of India, created under the Advocates Act 1961. The Advocates Act 1961, passed by Parliament on 9 March 1961 and effective from 1 July 1961, consolidated disparate colonial‑era bar regulations into a single framework. Section 3 of the Act formally established the Bar Council of India as a “statutory body” with nationwide jurisdiction, replacing the earlier provincial bar councils that had operated since the British era.
