BrahMos missiles

BrahMos missiles are a family of supersonic cruise weapons jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia. The name blends “Brahmaputra” and “Moscow,” reflecting the bilateral partnership that produced a missile capable of striking targets at Mach 2.8–3 with pinpoint accuracy. What sets BrahMos apart is its combination of high speed, low‑observable flight profile, and a modular design that allows launch from land, sea, air and, in future, submarine platforms, giving India a versatile strike capability across the Indo‑Pacific.

Historical Background

The BrahMos programme was formalised in 1998 when DRDO and NPO Mashinostroyenia created BrahMos Aerospace Ltd. as a 50:50 joint venture. Initial design work leveraged Russia’s 3M‑14 Kalibr technology, while Indian engineers contributed guidance, propulsion and systems integration expertise. The first flight‑test of a prototype occurred on 30 July 2001 from the Russian test range at Kapustin Yar, achieving a speed of 2.8 Mach and a range of 150 km. Subsequent trials in 2005 demonstrated sea‑launch capability from the Indian Navy’s INS Kolkata, and by 2007 the missile entered service with the Indian Army and Navy, marking the world’s first operational supersonic cruise missile.

Technical Architecture and Variants

BrahMos employs a two‑stage propulsion system: a solid‑fuel booster for launch followed by a liquid‑fuel ramjet that sustains supersonic cruise. The missile carries a conventional warhead of up to 300 kg, guided by an inertial navigation system (INS) augmented with satellite (GPS/GLONASS) updates and a terminal active radar seeker that yields a circular error probable (CEP) of less than 5 m. The original BrahMos‑I is limited to 290 km in accordance with the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) restrictions that applied to India until its accession in 2016; post‑2016 variants now reach 400 km.

Several derivatives have been fielded: the land‑attack version for the Army’s BrahMos‑II launchers, the anti‑ship version for the Navy’s Kh-35‑type vessels, and the air‑launched BrahMos‑A, first dropped from a Sukhoi Su‑30MKI in 2017. Ongoing projects include the hypersonic BrahMos‑II (targeting Mach 5 and a 500‑km range) and the lighter, cost‑reduced BrahMos‑NG (New Generation) slated for serial production from 2025 onward.

Operational Deployment and Export

As of March 2024, the Indian Armed Forces have received more than 300 BrahMos missiles, with the Army ordering 100 launchers, the Navy acquiring 100 ship‑borne missiles, and the Air Force integrating 100 air‑launched units. The missile has been employed in live‑fire exercises such as the 2022 “Vajra‑2022” drills, where BrahMos‑A demonstrated a 70 km strike from 15 km altitude. Export ambitions materialised in 2021 when the United Arab Emirates signed a memorandum of understanding for the sale of BrahMos‑NG, marking the first overseas customer for the system. The United States, France and Malaysia have expressed interest, prompting the Indian Ministry of Defence to negotiate technology‑transfer arrangements that respect MTCR guidelines.

Strategic Significance and International Comparison

BrahMos furnishes India with a rapid‑response, high‑precision strike option that can penetrate modern air‑defence networks, thereby reinforcing the country’s anti‑access/area‑denial (A2/AD) posture in the Indian Ocean Region. Compared with the U.S. Tomahawk (subsonic, 1,600 km range) and Russia’s Kalibr (supersonic, up to 2,500 km), BrahMos trades longer reach for superior speed and lower detectability, making it especially effective against time‑critical maritime and land targets. Its indigenous development and export potential also enhance India’s strategic autonomy and contribute to the nation’s emerging role as a defence‑technology exporter, a facet highlighted in recent diplomatic engagements such as the 2023 Jakarta visit.
