Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is India’s premier agency for research, design, and development of defence technologies, operating under the Ministry of Defence. Established to give the nation strategic autonomy in weapons systems, DRDO has grown into a network of 52 laboratories, 7 establishments and 3 production units that collectively deliver missiles, radars, combat vehicles, and electronic warfare suites. DRDO traces its lineage to the Technical Development Establishment (TDE) set up in 1948 at Delhi’s Defence Science Laboratory, a modest effort led by physicist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai to develop indigenous rockets. The formal creation of DRDO occurred on 1 January 1958 through a government order that merged TDE with the Directorate of Technical Development and Production, consolidating scattered wartime research under a single umbrella. In 2021 DRDO signed a memorandum of understanding with France’s Naval Group to co‑develop submarine combat systems, while a 2022 MoU with Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems focused on electronic warfare suites for the Indian Navy’s future aircraft carriers. These engagements not only diversify India’s defence supply chain but also position DRDO as a credible partner in the global arms market.

Current Status and Future Outlook

The Union Budget for FY 2024 allocated â‚č 30,000 crore (approximately $360 million) to DRDO, marking a 12 % increase over the previous year and reflecting the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self‑reliant India) thrust.
