Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is Indiaâs premier agency for research, design, and development of defence technologies, operating under the Ministry of Defence. Established to give the nation strategic autonomy in weapons systems, DRDO has grown into a network of 52 laboratories, 7 establishments and 3 production units that collectively deliver missiles, radars, combat vehicles, and electronic warfare suites. Origins and Historical Background
DRDO traces its lineage to the Technical Development Establishment (TDE) set up in 1948 at Delhiâs Defence Science Laboratory, a modest effort led by physicist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai to develop indigenous rockets. The formal creation of DRDO occurred on 1 January 1958 through a government order that merged TDE with the Directorate of Technical Development and Production, consolidating scattered wartime research under a single umbrella. Early milestones included the development of the first Indian sounding rockets (RHâ75) in 1961 and the launch of the indigenous guided missile program in 1970, laying the groundwork for later systems such as the Trishul and Akash.

DRDO is headed by a Chairmanâcurrently Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, appointed in 2020âwho reports directly to the Defence Minister. The organisationâs 52 laboratories are grouped into thematic clusters: aeronautics (e.g., Aeronautical Development Establishment), armaments (Armament Research and Development Establishment), electronics (Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics), and materials (Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute). In 2021 DRDO signed a memorandum of understanding with Franceâs Naval Group to coâdevelop submarine combat systems, while a 2022 MoU with Israelâs Rafael Advanced Defense Systems focused on electronic warfare suites for the Indian Navyâs future aircraft carriers. Current Status and Future Outlook
The Union Budget for FYâŻ2024 allocated âčâŻ30,000âŻcrore (approximatelyâŻ$360âŻmillion) to DRDO, marking a 12âŻ% increase over the previous year and reflecting the governmentâs âAtmanirbhar Bharatâ (selfâreliant India) thrust. Ongoing projects include the Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV), slated for a maiden flight in 2025, and the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) avionics suite, which aims to equip Indiaâs fifthâgeneration fighter by the early 2030s.
