The Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) is a bilateral framework launched in 2022 between India and the United Kingdom to deepen cooperation in defence research, production and procurement. It aims to streamline technology sharing, joint development of weapons systems and boost defence exports. It builds on earlier defence dialogues, such as the 2015 Defence and International Security Partnership, but introduces a structured mechanism for technology sharing and industrial collaboration.

Mechanism and Key Focus Areas

DTTI operates through joint working groups, with a primary focus on co-developing dual-use technologies and next-generation platforms. A notable early outcome was the 2023 memorandum to co-produce a next-generation unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), leveraging India’s DRDO and the UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL). The framework also facilitates private-sector participation, enabling firms like Rolls-Royce and Bharat Forge to explore joint ventures in aerospace and propulsion.
