Dry deciduous forest is a type of tropical forest that sheds its leaves during the dry season to conserve water. It supports unique wildlife, acts as a carbon sink, and sustains local livelihoods. An example is the teak‑dominated forests of central India's Deccan Plateau, which receive 800‑1200 mm of annual rainfall.

Dry deciduous forest, a distinct tropical forest type, is characterised by a pronounced leaf‑shedding period that coincides with the dry season, allowing trees to minimise transpiration and survive prolonged moisture deficits. Unlike evergreen rainforests, these ecosystems receive only 800–1 200 mm of rain annually, typically concentrated in a 3–5‑month monsoon, and they occupy roughly 5 % of the world’s forested area—about 100 million ha—making them both ecologically unique and globally significant.

Ecological Adaptations

The hallmark adaptation of dry deciduous trees is phenological leaf abscission, which can reduce canopy transpiration by up to 70 % during drought months. Species such as teak (Tectona grandis) and Indian rosewood (Dalbergia sissoo) develop thickened bark and deep taproots that tap groundwater reserves below 10 m, while leaf‑off periods also limit herbivore pressure. Soil in these forests is often lateritic, with high iron and aluminium oxides, and the litter layer decomposes rapidly during the wet months, returning 1.2–1.8 t C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ to the soil.

Geographical Distribution and Extent

In India, dry deciduous forest covers about 30.5 million ha, representing roughly 30 % of the nation’s total forest cover according to the Forest Survey of India 2022. The Deccan Plateau, the central Indian states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Andhra Pradesh host the classic teak‑dominated tracts, while the western slopes of the Eastern Ghats sustain mixed dry‑deciduous assemblages. Beyond the subcontinent, comparable ecosystems occur in Brazil’s Caatinga (≈10 million ha, 500–800 mm rainfall), Mexico’s tropical dry forest (≈25 million ha, 600–1 200 mm), and Madagascar’s spiny thickets, underscoring a pan‑tropical pattern linked to monsoonal climates.

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

Despite a lower canopy density than moist forests, dry deciduous woodlands support a rich fauna: the Indian leopard (Panthera pardus fusca), sloth bear (Melursus ursinus), and over 250 bird species, including the critically endangered great Indian bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps), find refuge within these habitats. Plant diversity includes more than 1 500 woody species, many of which are economically valuable for timber, resin, and medicinal compounds. Carbon‑sequestration studies estimate that these forests store 0.5–1.0 Pg C globally and sequester 0.5–2.0 Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹, contributing significantly to climate mitigation while also regulating local hydrology by enhancing groundwater recharge during the monsoon.

Threats and Conservation

Since the 1990s, large‑scale plantation drives have accelerated the conversion of native dry deciduous stands into monocultures of eucalyptus, pine, or fast‑growing teak, with the National Mission for a Green India targeting 5 million ha of new forest cover by 2030—of which an estimated 2.5 million ha are slated for plantation in dry zones. This shift reduces habitat heterogeneity, lowers biodiversity indices by up to 40 %, and diminishes carbon uptake relative to natural forest. In response, the Indian government has designated 12 % of dry deciduous area as protected under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, including Bandhavgarh National Park (≈1 000 km²) and Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary (≈500 km²).
