The term entered global consciousness during the 2003–2011 Iraq insurgency, when coalition reports indicated that IEDs accounted for roughly 90 % of all combat‑related casualties among U.S. and allied forces. By the end of 2015 the United States Department of Defense had logged more than 2,500 IED incidents in Afghanistan alone, underscoring the devices’ capacity to shape modern asymmetric warfare. Triggering assemblies range from simple mechanical pressure plates—activated by a weight of 10 kg or less—to sophisticated radio‑frequency (RF) receivers that respond to a 433 MHz signal transmitted from a handheld controller. Remote detonations frequently exploit commercial cell‑phone networks, with 2014 NATO after‑action reports identifying 30 percent of Afghan IEDs as “cell‑phone‑triggered” devices.
