The IndiaāRussia Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, signed in August 1971, formalised a strategic partnership between India and the Soviet Union, pledging political support and defence cooperation. It deepened India's diplomatic alignment with the USSR during the Cold War, influencing India's stance in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Notably, the treaty enabled Soviet naval assistance in protecting Indian maritime interests.
