By 2600 BCE the Mature Harappan phase begins, marked by the construction of large citadels and the appearance of the iconic “Great Bath” at Mohenjo‑daro. Iconic motifs—such as the “Pashupati” seal depicting a seated figure surrounded by animals—suggest a proto‑Shiva deity and hint at ritual practices involving water and fertility. Burials at Harappa and Rakhigarhi contain grave goods ranging from pottery to gold ornaments, indicating social differentiation, while the uniformity of house sizes across most neighborhoods points to a centrally regulated urban policy rather than a feudal hierarchy.

Legacy and Decline
