UNCLOS, adopted in 1982, is a worldwide treaty that sets out maritime boundaries, exclusive economic zones, navigation rights, and rules for resource exploitation and marine protection. A 200‑nautical‑mile EEZ, for example, gives a coastal state exclusive fishing and seabed mineral rights, a claim central to the South China Sea tensions.
