About — Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine, proclaimed in 1823 by President James Monroe, asserted that the Western Hemisphere was closed to further European colonization and that any interference would be viewed as a threat to U.S. security. It became a cornerstone of American foreign policy, justifying later interventions such as the 1898 Spanish‑American War.
