National Payments Corporation of India
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is a non‑profit organization established by the Reserve Bank of India and Indian banks to operate retail payment systems. It underpins the country's digital transaction infrastructure, enabling interoperable, low‑cost services such as the UPI platform that processes billions of payments monthly.
National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is the not-for-profit umbrella organization created by India’s central bank and commercial lenders to own and operate the country’s retail payment and settlement systems, most notably the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) that now clears over 10 billion transactions a month.
Origins / Historical Background
NPCI was incorporated in December 2008 under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013, with the Reserve Bank of India as the principal promoter and ten major banks—State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, Bank of India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Citibank, and HSBC—as founding shareholders. It began operations in April 2009, taking over the National Financial Switch (NFS) ATM network and soon launching the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) in 2010, which enabled 24/7 interbank fund transfers.
How It Works / Mechanism
NPCI designs, builds, and operates the technical backbone for multiple retail payment rails. UPI, its flagship product launched in April 2016, uses a four-corner model—payer’s bank, payee’s bank, NPCI as the switch, and the customer interfaces—allowing instant, interoperable transfers via simple identifiers like mobile numbers or QR codes. The corporation also runs RuPay, India’s domestic card network introduced in 2012, which now accounts for roughly 60 % of all debit and credit cards issued in the country, as well as Bharat BillPay, Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AePS), and the Bharat QR code standard.
Current Status / Implementation
As of March 2024, UPI alone processes more than 14 billion transactions monthly, with a peak single-day record of 400 million transactions. NPCI’s infrastructure supports over 400 banks and fintech partners, and its RuPay network has expanded to 24 countries through bilateral agreements, enabling cross-border card acceptance. The organization continues to iterate on its systems, introducing features such as UPI Lite for small-value offline payments and UPI Autopay for recurring mandates, while maintaining near-zero settlement failures.
