National Seismic Hazard Maps show the probability and intensity of ground shaking across a country, derived from past quakes and geological data. They guide building codes, landāuse planning and insurance, helping to limit casualties and economic loss. The 2014 USGS map raised the shaking hazard for Californiaās SanāÆAndreas region, prompting stricter retrofits.
