Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is the government‑owned enterprise tasked with the design, construction, operation, and de‑commissioning of India’s civilian nuclear power stations. The fleet comprises 14 Pressurised Heavy‑Water Reactors (PHWRs) ranging from 220 MW to 540 MW, and nine Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs) of 1 000 MW each at the Kudankulam site in Tamil Nadu. Kudankulam Unit 1 entered commercial operation in July 2013, followed by Unit 2 in December 2017, marking India’s first large‑scale Russian‑supplied VVER‑1000 reactors. Under construction are seven additional units, including Kudankulam Units 3‑5 (each 1 000 MW) and the 6‑unit Jaitapur project in Maharashtra, which will host European Pressurised Reactors (EPRs) of 1 650 MW each once the licensing process concludes.

The passage of the Sustainable Hydrogen and Nuclear Technology (SHANTI) Act 2023 opened the nuclear sector to private participation in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), a policy shift that NPCIL is navigating by partnering with firms such as BHEL and Larsen & Toubro for SMR design studies. In 2024, NPCIL announced a joint venture with the French‑Italian consortium EDF‑ENEL to explore a 300 MW SMR pilot at the Kalpakkam site, leveraging its existing infrastructure while adhering to the AERB’s new SMR safety guidelines.
