The Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988, is India's primary legislation to curb the manufacture, sale and smuggling of narcotics and psychotropic drugs. It authorises asset seizure, harsh penalties and cooperation with the 1988 UN drug conventions; in 2022 it facilitated the seizure of 1,200 kg of heroin in a single raid.
