The Preventive Detention Act, 1950 was a law passed by the Indian Parliament permitting the government to detain persons without trial for up to a year to avert threats to public order. It was the first peacetime use of preventive detention in independent India, provoking civil‑liberty debates. It was invoked against trade‑union leaders during the 1952 Bombay textile strike.
