About — Public Library Act 1955
The Public Library Act 1955, passed by the Indian Parliament, aimed to expand and modernise public libraries nationwide. It obliges state governments to allocate funds, set standards and create library authorities, thereby boosting literacy and lifelong learning. Under the Act, Karnataka formed a State Library Authority in 1965, which now oversees more than 1,200 public libraries.
