A secret ballot is a voting method in which each voter’s choices are kept confidential, preventing intimidation or retaliation. It underpins free and fair elections by protecting individual autonomy and reducing coercion. The practice was first introduced nationally in Australia’s 1856 Victorian election, giving rise to the term Australian ballot.
