SectionâŻ255(2) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 allows a High Court to order police investigation of a cognizable offence when a complaint is lodged and police remain inactive. Its significance lies in judicial oversight; for example, the Delhi High Court in 2018 directed a probe into a suspected homicide after the victimâs family petitioned.
