Section 5 of the Indian Constitution defines who is a citizen of India at the moment the Constitution came into force. It is significant because citizenship determines the entitlement to fundamental rights and duties under the Constitution. For example, it grants citizenship to anyone born in India on or after 26 January 1950, or to those whose parents were born there.
