Section 87 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 governs the compounding of certain criminal offences, allowing victim and accused to settle the matter out of court. Its inclusion modernises criminal justice by reducing trial load and encouraging resolution. For example, defamation listed in Schedule III may be compounded under this provision, leading to dismissal of the case upon signed agreement.
