The Senior Citizens Act, 1956, is an Indian statute that safeguards the welfare, health care and legal rights of persons aged 60 and above. It was the first law to recognise senior citizens as a vulnerable group, prompting the establishment of oldāage homes and pension schemes. Under it, Central Social Welfare Board launched an Old Age Pension Scheme providing assistance.
