The South China Sea is a marginal sea of the western Pacific bounded by China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei. It is a strategic maritime corridor rich in fisheries and potentially vast oil and gas reserves, making it a flashpoint for overlapping territorial claims. In 2016, an international tribunal ruled against China's nine‑dash line claim.
