The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 was a landmark legislation that redrew India’s internal boundaries on linguistic lines, merging and splitting existing provinces to create states such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala. It facilitated administrative efficiency and cultural cohesion, and for example, the Telugu‑speaking districts of Madras were carved out to form Andhra Pradesh.
