Veto power is the authority of a person or body to unilaterally reject a decision or legislation, preventing its enactment. It serves as a check that can balance majorities and protect minority or strategic interests. For example, the United Nations Security Council’s five permanent members each hold a veto, allowing any one of them to block a resolution.
