What is the Right to Information Act?

The Right to Information Act, 2005, is a landmark legislation that provides citizens with the right to access information held by public authorities. The Act aims to promote transparency and accountability in governance by making information available to citizens. Under the Act, citizens can request information from public authorities, and the authorities are required to provide the information within a specified timeframe.

How does the Right to Information Act work?

The Right to Information Act provides a three-tier mechanism for citizens to access information. The first tier is the Public Information Officer (PIO), who is responsible for providing information to citizens. If the PIO fails to provide information, the citizen can appeal to the First Appellate Authority (FAA). If the FAA also fails to provide information, the citizen can appeal to the Central Information Commission (CIC) or the State Information Commission (SIC), depending on the jurisdiction.

However, more needs to be done to ensure that public authorities comply with the Right to Information Act.
