Bay of Bengal

The Bay of Bengal is a large body of water located in the Indian Ocean. It is significant for regional trade and commerce. The Ganges River empties into it.

The Bay of Bengal, a triangular arm of the Indian Ocean covering roughly 2.2 million km², stretches from the eastern coast of India to the western shores of Myanmar and the Andaman Islands. Bounded by the Indian subcontinent to the west, the Malay Peninsula to the east, and the Sundaland archipelago to the south, it is the world’s largest regional bay and a pivotal conduit for maritime traffic between South and Southeast Asia. Its strategic position has shaped trade, climate, and geopolitics for millennia, making it a unique maritime hub.

Geography and Physical Characteristics

The bay’s coastline measures about 2,600 km, with the Indian state of West Bengal contributing 1,200 km and Bangladesh adding 580 km of low‑lying deltaic shore. Its deepest point, the Sunda Trench, reaches 4,600 m near the Andaman Sea, while the average depth is 2,200 m, yielding an estimated water volume of 5.5 × 10⁶ km³. The seabed hosts the Bengal Fan, the world’s largest submarine fan, formed by sediments carried from the Ganges‑Brahmaputra system.

Riverine Input and Hydrology

Four major rivers— the Ganges, Brahmaputra, Meghna, and Irrawaddy—discharge an average of 1.1 × 10⁵ m³ s⁻¹ into the bay, accounting for roughly 30 % of the global riverine input to the oceans. During the pre‑monsoon months, the combined freshwater outflow peaks at 1.5 × 10⁵ m³ s⁻¹, lowering surface salinity to 30 psu near the deltaic front. The sediment load, estimated at 1.2 billion tonnes per year, creates extensive mudflats and fuels the rapid progradation of the Sundarbans mangrove forest.

Climate, Monsoon, and Cyclone Activity

The Bay of Bengal drives the South‑Asian monsoon by heating more rapidly than the adjacent land, generating a low‑pressure cell that draws moist air inland and produces an average of 1,200 mm of rainfall over the coastal belt each July–September. Seasonal wind reversal shifts from a southwest monsoon (June–September) to a northeast monsoon (October–December), influencing navigation windows for bulk carriers. Between 1990 and 2020, the bay recorded 84 tropical cyclones, including the devastating 1999 Odisha Cyclone (Category 5, 3,000 km/h gusts) and the 2020 Cyclone Amphan (peak intensity 260 km/h), together causing over 5,000 deaths and $13 billion in damages.

Economic and Strategic Importance

Four major ports—Kolkata (India), Chittagong (Bangladesh), Yangon (Myanmar), and Visakhapatnam (India)—handle more than 1.2 billion tonnes of cargo annually, representing roughly 15 % of India’s maritime trade volume. The bay’s fisheries yield an estimated 7 million tonnes of fish per year, supporting the livelihoods of over 30 million coastal residents across three nations. Naval bases in Visakhapatnam, Colombo, and Da Nang underscore the bay’s role in regional security, while the proposed India‑Myanmar–Bangladesh “Bay of Bengal Economic Corridor” aims to link rail and maritime networks by 2030.

Environmental Concerns and Conservation Efforts

The Sundarbans, spanning 10,000 km² of the bay’s western fringe, host the world’s largest mangrove ecosystem and provide habitat for the endangered Bengal tiger, with a 2022 census counting 114 tigers. Coral reefs off the Andaman Islands cover 1,200 km² but have suffered a 30 % decline in live cover since 2000 due to bleaching events linked to sea‑surface temperatures exceeding 30 °C. Pollution from plastic debris exceeds 1.5 million tonnes annually, prompting the Bay of Bengal Marine Pollution Control Initiative (launched 2018) to install 250 km of river‑bank trash interceptors by 2025.
