The Dravidian style of temple architecture is a distinctive and ancient style prevalent in southern India, characterized by the use of pillars, mandapas, and a pyramidal tower known as a vimana. This style is significant for its intricate carvings and sculptures that adorn the temple walls and pillars. The Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, is a notable example of this style, built in the 11th century by the Chola dynasty.

The Dravidian style of temple architecture, flourishing across the southern Indian subcontinent from the early centuries CE to the modern era, is distinguished by its soaring, tiered towers (vimānas), elaborate gateway towers (gopurams), and richly carved pillared halls (mandapas). The Vijayanagara period (14th–17th centuries) amplified the gopuram, as illustrated by the 156 m tall Vellore Fort’s 70 m gopuram, while retaining the core Dravidian layout. From the 18th century onward, colonial documentation by the Archaeological Survey of India (established 1861) standardized conservation practices, leading to the 1905 restoration of the Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram, a Pallava masterpiece of 8th‑century Dravidian design. Contemporary temple architects continue to employ traditional ratios; the 1999 Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple expansion in Srirangam adhered to the ancient 1:5 height‑to‑base rule for its new gopuram, integrating modern engineering while preserving historic aesthetics.

Beyond South India, the Dravidian idiom influenced temple construction in Sri Lanka’s Anuradhapura region and, through diaspora, the design of Hindu temples in Malaysia and Singapore, where gopurams often exceed 30 m and replicate the tiered silhouette.
