Ganges Basin

The Ganges Basin is a vast river basin in South Asia. It is significant due to its fertile soil and water resources. The basin spans over 400,000 square miles.

The Ganges Basin, draining roughly 1.1 million km² of South Asia, ranks as the world’s third‑largest river basin after the Amazon and Congo. It channels the waters of the Ganga and its tributaries—from the Gangotri Glacier in Uttarakhand to the Brahmaputra‑Meghna network in Bangladesh—into the Bay of Bengal, sustaining an estimated 500 million inhabitants across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and the Tibetan plateau. Its fertile alluvial plains, monsoonal rainfall, and dense settlement pattern make the basin a linchpin of regional agriculture, culture, and trans‑border water politics.

Geographical Extent and Physical Setting

The basin stretches from the high Himalayas (elevation ≈ 3,900 m at Gangotri) to the low‑lying Ganges‑Brahmaputra delta, which covers about 105,000 km² of tidal marshes and mangroves. It encompasses the Indian states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and the union territory of Delhi, as well as Bangladesh’s Rangpur, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions; together these jurisdictions account for ≈ 70 % of the basin’s land area. Major tributaries—Yamuna (≈ 1,376 km), Ghaghara (≈ 1,080 km), Gandak (≈ 630 km) and Kosi (≈ 730 km)—contribute more than 30 % of the total discharge.

The alluvial plain averages 150 m above sea level, but the upper catchment descends sharply to the Himalayan foothills, creating a gradient that accelerates sediment transport. Cities such as Varanasi (population ≈ 1.2 million, founded ≈ 3,000 years ago), Patna (≈ 2 million, ancient Pataliputra, capital of the Mauryan Empire c. 322 BCE), and Dhaka (≈ 21 million, situated on the lower Meghna) lie directly on the basin’s flood‑prone corridors, illustrating the intertwining of geography and urban development.

Hydrology and Climate

The Ganga originates at the Gangotri Glacier, where annual melt contributes roughly 12 km³ of water, and the river’s mean discharge at Farakka (the India‑Bangladesh border) is about 12,000 m³ s⁻¹, ranking it among the world’s most voluminous rivers. Annual precipitation in the upper basin ranges from 1,000 mm in the western Himalayas to 2,500 mm in the eastern foothills, while the lower plains receive 2,500–3,500 mm, creating a pronounced north‑south rainfall gradient.

The South Asian summer monsoon, arriving in early June and retreating by late September, delivers ≈ 80 % of the basin’s total rainfall within a three‑month window, causing peak flows that can exceed 30,000 m³ s⁻¹ during extreme events such as the 2020 Kosi flood. In contrast, winter months (December–February) see discharge dip below 2,000 m³ s⁻¹, exposing the basin to water‑stress conditions that affect irrigation and hydroelectric generation.

Historical and Cultural Landscape

Human settlement in the Ganges Basin dates to the early Neolithic Mehrgarh culture (≈ 7,000 BCE), but the first urban civilization— the Indus‑Ganges interaction zone—emerged around 2,500 BCE, as evidenced by Harappa‑type artifacts found near the Ghaggar‑Hakra tributary.
