The India‑Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship, signed in 1950, replaced the 1923 agreement and created open borders, free movement of citizens, and mutual defence and trade cooperation. It cemented Nepal’s sovereignty while allowing Indian goods to transit Nepal without customs duties, exemplified by the unrestricted flow of Indian railway freight across the border.
