Vande Bharat Express

The Vande Bharat Express is India’s indigenous semi‑high‑speed train, built by the Integral Coach Factory and operated by Indian Railways. It signifies a leap in domestic rail technology, offering faster, more comfortable travel without reliance on foreign manufacturers. The New Delhi‑Varanasi service, launched in 2021, reaches 160 km/h.

Vande Bharat Express, officially known as Train 18, is India’s first indigenously designed semi‑high‑speed electric multiple unit (EMU) built by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai and operated by Indian Railways. Unveiled on 15 January 2021, the train can sustain a commercial speed of 160 km h⁻¹ while offering on‑board Wi‑Fi, bio‑toilets and automatic doors, marking a decisive shift from reliance on foreign‑made rolling stock to home‑grown high‑speed technology.

Origins and Development

The concept of a domestically produced high‑speed train emerged from the “Make in India” initiative announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2019, which tasked the Ministry of Railways with delivering a self‑propelled trainset within two years. In April 2020, ICF’s senior engineer R. M. Kumar presented the first prototype to Railway Board Chairman S. M. Mishra, initiating a series of accelerated trials on the Delhi‑Agra route that concluded successfully in November 2020.

The prototype’s successful clearance under the Indian Railway Standards (IRS) 2020‑03 for crashworthiness and the subsequent certification by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) on 30 December 2020 paved the way for mass production, with the first batch of five trainsets approved for fabrication in early 2021. Technical Design and Capabilities

Each Vande Bharat trainset comprises 16 coaches, including two power cars equipped with 2.2 MW three‑phase AC traction motors supplied by Alstom’s Indian subsidiary, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km h⁻¹ in under 5 minutes. The coaches are constructed from lightweight stainless‑steel alloy, achieving a tare weight of 1,200 tonnes, and feature regenerative braking that recovers up to 30 % of kinetic energy during deceleration.

Strategically, the success of Vande Bharat has informed the National Rail Plan 2030, which earmarks USD 12 billion for the development of dedicated high‑speed corridors linking Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad, with the EMU technology serving as a prototype for future 200 km h⁻¹ services.
